Course Description

The Enigma of Dr. A.T. Still and Success of Osteopathy presented by Jason Haxton
 Link to Bio
10:00 am to 12:00 pm EST

This presentation will focus on the physical person, his motivation for better healthcare, influences in his ideas, his journey, pitfalls, teaching methods and ultimate success of osteopathy.
If Dr. A.T. Still were here speaking with us today, would we even understand him?  Dr. Still, or simply "Drew" to his friends, would engage and encourage others without being heavy-handed in his teaching style. Drew wanted the students to internalize and use their perception and skills to treat patients.
Furthermore, by observing nature his whole life, he was able to intervene and control a situation by looking from outside of the event or occurrence.
Osteopathy is both science and art. As a result, each patient is treated uniquely, understanding the principles of physiology and anatomy. Let's explore these aspects in depth.
  • Discuss the historical perspectives of A.T. Still and how this perspective  influences healthcare education.
  • Discuss quotes and facts related to the development of osteopathy from Dr. Still’s observations in nature and research by early followers in the field.
  • Review information that is subject to analysis and synthesis of material presented to deduce the growth of osteopathy as a healthcare profession focused on evidence based medicine.

The Philosophy and Mechanical Principles of Osteopathy – A Nine-year-old Boy with Wonky Teeth presented by Richard Douglas, D.O.

1:00 pm to 2:30 pm EST

Have you ever read A.T Still's books, and had no idea what he meant? Yes, us too! Join the OAO Education Committee for three days with Richard Douglas, D.O. on the importance of why we should read Still's work, but also how to read it. Still used Webster's dictionary from 1828, and since then American English has changed immensely. Many of the words he used are used in the same context as they are today, leading to misinterpretation of the information he presented. Join us, April 26, 27, and 28th to learn how his writings from over a century ago can help us in our modern day-practices!
